| Airline Line name: | Monarch |
| Good Points: | Monarch fares seem to be initially reasonable. |
| Bad Points: | Too many hidden taxes, paying for luggage to be stored in the hold is a total rip-off |
| Review: | My daughter had to book three tickets with Monarch this week, she was flying from Manchester to Menorca. I was disgusted to hear that Monarch are now charging passengers to store bags in the hold, why? This has really upset me because it seems that airlines like Monarch are charging customers extra for just about everything that not so long ago used to be included in the airfare as standard. What gets me is the advertised air fare is never what you end up paying, as the total price is a great deal higher. Here’s a brief summary of the additional taxes and ‘extras’ for my daughters flight: The booking was for three passengers, the initial cost of the flights was £338, but the grand total was £464. Here’s a breakdown of the figures: UK Passenger Service Charge: £39.7 – This is what the airlines pay the airports for landing fees etc. Quite why airlines line Monarch list this item separately is beyond me – in my opinion they do this so that they can advertise lower fares, when in point of fact they could add this to the advertised price so as not to mislead the public. Fuel surcharge: £20 - Again this has not a government imposed tax – so why not add this on to the advertised cost of the flight? Again, this is misleading as this tax is added at the booking stage. Extras: £35 - Monarch charged £5 for the dubious privilege of selecting a seat and another £5 per bag for storage in the hold. Air passenger duty: £30 – This is a tax that WAS introduced by the government, so the airline cannot be blamed. No doubting that Monarch and other airlines will try to point the finger at the government for the seemingly ever increasing cost of flights – the fact is the airlines are cashing in on the public at every opportunity, how long before they introduce a toilet tax? |
