| Name: | Budapest, Hungary |
| Good Points: | Still cheap, easy to get around, friendly |
| Bad Points: | Too many tourists! |
| Review: | I had no idea what to expect when I arrived at Budapest - certainly, I was surprised at the ultra-modern and easy to navigate airport (especially having queued at Manchester for hours) and easily found the minibus service into the City. We stayed on the Pest side, very near the main Central Market, which was fascinating, although clearly geared up for the hoardes of tourists which descend come mid-morning. Paprika and other peppers everywhere oh! and the cakes! Two slices of amazing cake, a large bottle of iced tea - to go at £1. The public transport system is brilliant (once you figure it out) and cheap - there are several circular tours you can find yourself on. There's a tram - No 2 - which goes up and down the side of the Danube (which sure isn't blue!) and a Bus 56 will take you up into the woods where you can have a wander and get the train back into town. The main tourist drag is the Vaci Ut, with it's usual tourist souvenirs. Fine for a drink, but don't eat there - go over to Raday Utca, off Kalvin Terrace, for a whole street of differnt restaurants and bars - all the ones we tried were excellent food and value. Shopping isn't too good - by our standards. I was very disappointed in the flea market (and couldn't barter anyway) and the Tesco hypermarket was a disgrace. I suppose I had expected Prague - it wasn't - the people were friendlier and all the younger ones can speak English. The buildings show the fatigue of years of Nazis and Communism, although an elegant beauty remains. My favourite sight was the collosial Liberty Lady overlooking the river (and beautifully lit up at night)but you can't get a postcard of her anywhere, because of her connections with communism, which the Budapest people are doing their best to forget. I will remember Budapest as a city in which to just chill, to wander through the streets and catching glimpses of stunning architecture around each corner, of lazing over a meal in the eveing sun (and hoping the smell of the drains is blowing the other way!). Finally, I couldn't even start to pretend to understand Hungarian, but I did make an effort with thank you - gersonom - but from the delighted laughter this evoked every time I said it, I think I must have been pronomcing it wrong! My overall impression was of a lovely city with friendly people who won't know what's hit them with the inflation that the Euro will bring. |

| I was going to write a review of Budapest but George has said it all - I can't think of anything to add. An excellent review. |
