Good Points: Vibrant, exciting city, with plenty of nightlife. Wonderful beaches, fantastic climate.
Bad Points: Quite isolated. A journey to any other major city is either a flight or a long, long flight.
Review: Situated on the Swan River and close to the bustling port of Fremantle (Freo to the locals) Perth is the a huge metropolis of Western Australia. Approximately 80% of the entire population of WA live in or around Perth.

The City Centre is compact enough to easily navigate on foot. Free walking tours are operated by the city council. Plenty of nightlife to cater for all tastes, especially on Northgate, one of the cities main thoroughfares.

As with most Australian cities, the public transport system in Perth is exceptional and inexpensive - it’s actually free inside the city centre.

There are cruises available along the Swan River and Kings Park is as beautiful as any city centre park I’ve ever seen.

Not to be missed is a day trip to the magnificent Rottnest Island, a former Aborigine prison. Ferries are available at both Perth and Fremantle. Rottnest is a virtually unspoilt paradise now with incredible beaches and home to Quokkas, a marsupial native only to the island, although they look very much like extremely large rats to me and to the Dutch navigator who discovered it and named it “Rats Nest”. There is only one bus and no cars are permitted. Bicycle hire is essential and heaps of fun whilst touring around.

Fremantle is certainly worth spending a full day there and don't forget to visit the Maritime Museum and Submarine tour.

There are a number of tour companies offering day trips to other parts of WA. Wherever you decide to go, be prepared for a long journey.

Overall, Perth is a very pleasant city to visit whilst in this part of the world.
