Car hints and tips, when you arrive at the airport...

Picking up - avoid the queues...

Queues at the collection desks can be horrific. However, if there are two or more of you, send someone straight to the hire desk while you wait at the carousel for the luggage.

Booking in...

Take your time as you need to thoroughly understand and agree the hire contract you are signing. Always read the small print.

Rules..

Understand the rules for returning the car. You may pick up the car with a full tank of fuel and if you do not return it full you will be charged accordingly, in some cases the charge could be at a premium.

Children...

Is the car child friendly, check seating and childproof locks.

Comfort...

Obviously, you will need air conditioning that works in hot countries.

Contact numbers...

Ensure that you have contact telephone numbers for the car rental company.

Checking...

Check the car thoroughly and make sure any damage, including minor scratches are noted in any documents. A test drive is a good idea if you can arrange it and you have the time, if not at the first possible opportunity thoroughly check that everything works properly before you drive too far away from the depot. It is much easier to obtain a replacement car at this stage.

Alarms and doors...

Make sure you understand how the car alarm or immobiliser works. Doors. A useful security precaution is to keep the doors locked at all times.

Security...

Never leave valuables in the vehicle, don't advertise that you are a tourist by leaving tell tale signs when you park.

Drop Off...

You may pick up the car at the airport terminal but sometimes you will be asked to return the vehicle to a depot that is not on site at the airport. It is worthwhile knowing where the depot is and how long it takes to return to the terminal. You dont want to miss your flight because you didnt allow enough time to drop off your vehicle.

Luggage...

If you have passenger’s, drop them off at the terminal with the luggage first before returning the car to the depot.
